The stingray was caught accidentally on June 13, 2022 after getting caught on the fishing hook of a local fisherman south of Stung Treng, northeastern Cambodia. After catching the fish, this fisherman immediately informed the agency Wonders of the Mekong – a joint Cambodian-U.S. research project.

According to data published by Wonders of the Mekong, the stingray is nearly 4 meters long from snout to tail and weighed slightly under 300kg. The giant stingray is heavier than the previous record-holder, a 293-kilogram Mekong giant catfish, discovered in Thailand.

The fish was named Boremei which means “full moon” in Cambodian and was identified as a female.

Once tagged, the fish is released back into the Mekong River.
