Thailand continues to be the top source of tourists to Laos, while Vietnam ranks second with 263,160 visitors in the first quarter of 2024. China, South Korea, and the United States also closely follow, highlighting the country’s appeal to a diverse range of international tourists.

ASEAN countries recorded a total of 620,250 tourists, while the majority of accumulated tourists came from Asia and the Pacific. Other contributing countries include nations from Europe with a total of 84,788 tourists, 35,191 tourists from the Americas, and just 2,539 tourists from Africa and Middle Eastern countries combined.

The allure of Laos as a tourist destination has been recognized by travel magazines, praising it as an attractive destination for “slow tourism”. Its cultural attractions, offbeat experiences, and timeless charm have been pointed out as the main draws for tourists seeking a unique and authentic travel experience.

The Lao government is optimistic about the future of the domestic tourism industry and aims to welcome at least 4.6 million international tourists in 2024, generating an estimated revenue of 1.3 billion USD.
