Ms. Kanya Keomany was elected alongside five other officials to be members of the FIFA council. This election has made Ms. Kanya the first Laotian to be appointed as a FIFA council member.

The other elected member come from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Ms. Kanya also took to her Facebook to express her delight.

“I am extremely honored and grateful to be elected as FIFA Council member…” she said. “I wish to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for the confidence and the trust given to me by the AFC Member Associations to represent Asian Females in the highest governing body of football in the world.”

The FIFA Council is the main decision-making body of the organization in the intervals of FIFA Congress. It acts as a non-executive strategic group that sets the vision for FIFA and global football. The FIFA Council was created in 2016 to replace the FIFA Executive Committee after a 2015 scandal where at least 11 people were arrested on suspicion of receiving USD 150 million in bribes.

The FIFA Council consists of 37 members: one President elected by the FIFA Congress, eight Vice Presidents, and 28 more members elected, like Ms. Kanya Keomany, for four year terms by the member associations. At least one female representative must be elected in each confederation. The President and members of the Council are limited to three consecutive terms in office.
