The plant, Gabal El Asfar, located on the outskirts of Cairo has a total capacity of 500,000 m3/d and caters to the needs of the eastern part of the Egyptian capital, equivalent to a population of about 8 million people.

The complex has a treatment capacity of 2.5 million m3/d, providing water to 12 million inhabitants. The complex is the largest of its kind in Africa and in the Middle East and the third in the world.

The CAPW (Egyptian Construction Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater) awarded the contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the WWTP to a consortium consisting of ACCIONA Agua, German group Passavant- Roediger and Egyptian company Hassan Allam Construction.

 

The contract, which includes operation and maintenance of the plant for a period of two years, has a budget of 120 million euros.
